Cyprus – A quick overview..
Cyprus has a long and full history going back to the Palaeolithic era. One of the most important factors that enabled this rich history is the island’s strategic positioning on the map. Located at a crossroad between 3 continents (Europe, Asia and Africa) the country was influenced by different civilizations throughout history. This resulted to having different ages such as:
- The Bronze Age,
- The Early Iron Age,
- Ancient Age prior to Christianisation,
- Byzantine Age (The Crusades)
- Kingdom of Cyprus (Romans, Venetians)
- Ottoman Empire
- Modern Cyprus
In 1878 the United Kingdom acquired Cyprus from the Ottoman Empire and made the island a British colony until 1960 when the Republic of Cyprus was created. Furthermore, in 1974 the Turkish military invaded and illegally obtained the 33.3% of the Island. Until today it is the only country in the world which is divided into two countries, the other one being North Cyprus. North Cyprus is not recognized by any country in the world as an official country except Turkey.
The culture is also influenced by many civilizations and you can distinguish this influence by spoken words in the Cypriot dialect and some customs. However the Country’s official language is Greek and religion is Greek Orthodox Christian Church. Official languages are also Turkish and English.
On the island we celebrate most of the international holidays such as Christmas, New Year and Easter which is considered to be one the most important religious holidays of the Greek Orthodox Church.
